Organized by the Saint-Sacrement Business Centre and funded by the Ministère des Affaires culturelles du Québec, the Symposium de sculpture sur bois (Wood Sculpture Symposium) took place in Parc Samuel Holland in 1970 as part of the Festival d’été de Québec. Participating artists— Pierre Bourgault and several students of the École de sculpture sur bois de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, including Richard Bossé, Denis Colette, Jacques David, Esther Lapointe, Réal Lauzon and Serge Otis — created toy sculptures with white pine wood sourced from Maine (United States). Some of the pieces were then given to Quebec City to be installed in Parc Samuel Holland, while others were bought by private companies.
