The Symposium de sculpture took place as part of the Fête national du Québec in Joliette on the esplanade of Place Bourget. Directed by the Fête national du Québec Committee, the symposium received support from the Ministère des Affaires culturelles du Québec, the City of Joliette (owner of the art work) and the Maison Louis Desrochers & fils ltée. Six sculptors were invited to the event: Paul Borduas, Maximilien Boucher, Pierre-Roland Dinel, Joseph Marcil, Ethel Rosenfield and Gaétan Thérien. After interviewing citizens, local press journalists at the time reported that many of the citizens they interviewed found the pieces surprising, confusing and incomprehensible.
