After studying architecture and engineering at Sir George Williams University, Gord Smith worked at Lawson Betts and Cash, an architectural firm in Montreal (1956-1958). He held an exhibition in 1962 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and took part in the 2nd Montreal Sculpture Symposium (held at Château Dufresne, the original site of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal) in 1965 with Sans titre, a multi-component steel sculpture. In 1967, he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He has taught as an assistant professor in the visual arts department of the University of Victoria (1972-1975) and as a visiting professor in the art and history department of McMaster University in Hamilton. While variable in size, his sculptures include several monumental pieces and are made from materials such as bronze, steel and wood. They range from abstract to figurative and have drawn praise from critics, leading to a considerable number of exhibitions in Quebec and Ontario, as well as both private and public commissions for works integrated into architecture in Canada and the United States.
