SIVUARAPIK SHEEG, Joshua (1949-2011)

Born in a camp near Puvirnituq, Quebec, Joshua Sivuarapik Sheeg studied fine arts for one year at the University of Alaska. He learned the techniques of goldsmithery, ceramics, drawing and photography as well as art history. He pursued his studies at Sheridag College in Port Credit, Ontario and was later invited as a sculptor to represent Inuit art at the Canadian Pavilion at Expo 67. Following this experience, he worked at the Puvirnituq Cooperative. In addition to creating artwork, he demonstrated Inuit sculpture techniques, participated in the production of a film on Inuit life and collaborated in promoting the art of his people. The main subjects of his sculptures are very detailed and realist scenes of traditional hunting and birds, especially falcons. His sculptures have been shown in Chicago, Boston, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and New York. They are a part of the permanent collections of the Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec City, the Eskimo Museum in Churchill, Manitoba, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada.
