Hélène Sarrazin holds a Certificate in fine arts from the Université de Montréal (1980). She also completed a BFA (1983) and an MFA (1988) at the Université du Québec à Montréal, where she is currently pursuing a doctorate in the study and practice of art. Generally simple and refined, her installations evoke muted atmospheres rather than defined spaces and incorporate nature sounds, as exemplified by Mater/Materia (1999).
