SARKIS TUMANIAN, Serge (1952)

Russian-born Serge Sarkis Tumanian, or SAR, creates primarily monumental sculptures that can be found in museums and public places around the world, including the Los Angeles International Airport and the Utsukushi-ga-hara Open Air Museum in Japan. The combination of traditional and modern influences in his work is exemplified by Cure, an architecturally integrated work at the Centre Multivocationnel Claude-David (formerly the Le Gardeur hospital). Its abstract character is paired with an allusion to Le tireur d’épine (Boy with Thorn), a sculpture dating back to 1 BCE; according to the artist, the reference evokes the notions of healing and self-healing.
