SAFDIE, Sylvia (1942)

Sylvia Safdie holds a BFA from Concordia University (1976). A former teacher at Dawson College (1972-1987) and at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts (1981), she has been the recipient of several research grants and exhibited her work across Canada. Safdie works with steel, glass, bronze, soil and rocks (occasionally connected with bronze dowels) to create unusual spaces that evoke memory and silence. One of her installations, for example, consisted of rocks that resembled feet of various sizes; paired and lined up in rows, they were interspersed with several feet cast in bronze – reminders of the absence of any physical presence.
