After completing a BA at Sir George Williams University (1956), Morton Rosengarten studied at St Martin’s School of Art in London (1956-1958) and the Canadian Bronze Foundry in Montreal (1960-1962). He has previously taught at the Saidye Bronfman Centre, Bishop’s University, Champlain College Lennoxville, Dawson College and Montreal’s Sir George Williams University. A close friend of poet and musician Leonard Cohen, Rosengarten has been actively involved in the Montreal art scene since the 1950s. His lacquered wood sculptures, occasionally used as models for his works in bronze, aluminum and stainless steel, explore the theme of the goddess, drawing upon the Bible, ancient Greece and, at times, Maya culture. These pieces include the series Ladies of the Heavens and Heads, as well as an ongoing project currently entitled Pylons. In 2004, the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke organized a comprehensive retrospective of his work.
