Réal Patry holds a BFA in visual arts from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and an MFA in visual arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal. In 1983, he received first prize in the Birks scholarship competition in Trois-Rivières. Alongside his teaching career at various Université du Québec campuses, Patry has exhibited his stereoscopic installations across Quebec and produced multidisciplinary installations with Claude Rivest. His work is based upon superimposing two photographs on a single print, taking two simultaneous pictures with parallel lenses and using complementary colours. Visitors are offered special glasses that allow them to see the images in three dimensions. These stereoscopic images thus draw upon the fine line between reality and virtuality. Patry’s installations can also incorporate critical humour, reflected in plastic figurines (monsters, robots), toy guns, and dolls with their legs in the air and their heads buried under cloth. But like some macabre theatre, these assemblages harbour a brooding sense of despair beneath their playful exterior.
