Gilles Mihalcean is a sculptor, author, curator and teacher who trained at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal (1966-1968). Since 1970, as well as producing public art works, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States and Europe. He was awarded the prestigious Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award from the Canada Council for the Arts in 1987 and has been the recipient of the Jean-Paul Riopelle Career Grant (2005-2007) and the Prix Paul-Émile Borduas (2011). Mihalcean uses various materials in his sculptures, juxtaposing volumes of varying scales in the same work and frequently including figures and everyday objects. These are at times fragments, but great care is taken with the placement and spatial arrangement of each element in order to create unexpected associations.
