LEBEL, Jean

After graduating with a BFA from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (1979), Jean Lebel received a scholarship and left to study mosaics at the Fine Arts Academy of Ravenna in Italy for two years. On his return, he and a group of colleagues came together to found Atelier Silex. In the years 1983 and 1985, he participated in two Canadian mosaic symposiums at the Orford Arts Centre near Magog. In 1989, he received grants from the Quebec programs for technical resources and creative support. Lebel developed an unusual technique for mosaic work through the binding of tessera and resin that adds relief to the material and makes it resistant to unforgiving winters. His work is exhibited primarily in the Trois-Rivières region.
