André Lapointe completed an MFA in visual arts at the Université du Québec à Montréal and attended the École de Sculpture in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli. In 1975, he became one of the founding members of the Groupe des Six, which traveled throughout Quebec (as well as in France) for several years producing sculptures at ephemeral symposiums. Co-author of Pierre sculptables du Québec: marbres, calcaires et roches tendres (1988), he has been teaching in the visual arts department at the Université de Moncton in New Brunswick since 1988. Lapointe was honoured as artist of the year in visual arts by the Association acadienne des artistes professionnels in 1999 and received the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation’s Strathbutler Award in 2005. Over the course of his career, he has produced several public art works, including pieces at the Centre hospitalier de Matane, at the Université de Moncton and in Rivière-du-Loup. Inspired by maritime images, he works primarily in stone-cutting (favouring granite in particular) and creates unusual, somewhat surrealist forms that disrupt and alter reality. With the help of mechanics, he controls the forces that nature imposes upon his materials and accentuates the moment of transformation. He participated in the Gatineau symposium in 2000 and helped to establish Moncton’s Symposium d’art/nature.
