LAPKA, Eva (1944)

Eva Lapka moved to Canada in 1968 after training in sculpture in Brno, Moravia. She settled in Montreal and took up ceramics, eventually shifting her focus from turning-wheel pottery to sculpture, in which she favours schematic human forms. She has served as both director and ceramics teacher at the Visual Arts Centre in Montreal. Like ruins, Lapka’s sometimes fragmented works demonstrate an attention to the vulnerability of human beings; all of her pieces are centred on the notion of uncertainty to more effectively highlight human resilience to the pitfalls of time. In 1999, the McClure Gallery in Westmount presented an extensive retrospective exhibition of her work entitled Ombres et Lumières.
