Jean Lanthier is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts at Université Laval (1976). His work centres on the notions of ambiguity, juxtaposition, contrast and complementary forms. His sculptures, often fragmented and grouped in skilful, though seemingly chaotic, arrangements, reflect a particular emphasis on bringing out colour through the use of texture. Since the 1990s, many of the tableau-objects he has exhibited in Quebec and Ontario have focused on the contradiction between individual parts and the whole and reassessed the legacy of modernity from a critical standpoint.
