Since completing art studies at Concordia University (1986-1987), Sylvie Laliberté has been producing multidisciplinary works that involve printmaking, drawing, photography, video, performance and installation. Under the cover of a playful, even childish game, her pieces are close to Dadaism in that she humorously yet ironically denounces the great canons of art – its hierarchies and categorization of genres – and the notion of “good taste” with its imposed constraints. Words and light-hearted song are essential elements in her subtly critical work, which reconciles viewers with their everyday surroundings and brings them closer to their own lives and moods. Laliberté has received numerous notable awards and distinctions such as the Prix Louis-Comtois (1999), a special mention at the Locarno Videoart Festival in Switzerland (2000) and First Prize (shared) at the Berlin Transmediate-International Media Art Festival in Germany (2001). In 2007, she published Je suis formidable mais cela ne dure jamais très longtemps with Éditions Les 400 coups.
