With a university background in history and literature, John Heward has led a unique career shaped by his focus on at once spontaneous, direct and deeply personal artwork. His approach is rooted in experimentation, straddling the fields of figurative and abstract art and defying conventional genres and practices. A painter, sculptor and musician, Heward has presented his work in Canada, the United States, Europe and China while also playing concerts and recording contemporary, jazz and improvisational music. The group exhibitions in which he has taken part include Traffic: Conceptual Art in Canada c. 1965 to 1980 (2010-2012), Québec/New York (2001), Peinture, Peinture (1998), La Biennale de Montréal (1998) and Stations (1987). In 2008, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec organized a retrospective of his work entitled John Heward. Un parcours/Une collection. He was awarded the Prix Paul-Émile Borduas in 2012.
