HAMELIN, Pierre (1955-2004)

Pierre Hamelin was a self-taught artist whose work comprised not only sculpture, but also engravings, music and poetry. Combining organic and manufactured elements, his assemblages bring to mind the surrealist collages of Junk Art, juxtaposing refuse collected off the streets (items Hamelin referred to as “rejects from the market of useful things”) with animal body parts. In addition to holding solo exhibitions, he was actively involved in cultural organizations in Quebec such as La Chambre blanche, Videre, Engramme and l’Œil de Poisson.
