Lorraine Fontaine holds a BFA (1985) and an MFA from the Université du Québec à Montréal (1991). Her work explores photography, sculpture and the design of landscaped environments, such as those created and integrated into Quebec’s roadway system between 1983 and 1985. In addition to the relationships between truth and perception, nature and culture, she focuses on the memory of place to better understand the context of her projects. Her installations thus become a form of staging and transforming territory, a way of connecting with the observer. Her solo shows include exhibitions at Washington’s National Museum of Women in the Arts (2013); the Paramount Hotel during Québec-New York 2001; the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (2000-2001); the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris (1997); and EXPRESSION, Centre d’exposition de Saint-Hyacinthe (1995). She has also completed architecturally integrated works, notably at Baldwin Park and Cirque du Soleil in Montreal and the Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire cemetery in Saint-Hyacinthe.
