DUPRAS, Pierre (1937)

Pierre Dupras holds Certificates in film (1983-1984), printed artwork (1984-1985) and sculpture (1987) from the Université du Québec à Montréal. A professor and sculptor, he has also worked as a caricaturist in various forms of media, notably publishing a collection of caricatures and cartoons entitled Vive le Québec libre in 1969. He was selected to design the “Louve” trophy for the annual Festival du nouveau cinéma in Montreal and has also created tableaux-sculptures, which incorporate low reliefs of sculpted wood into canvas paintings. In 1995, the exhibition Toporythme at Galerie Verticale sought to showcase this synthesis between the mental space of painting and the physical space of sculpture. The artist’s use of ceramic symbolized primitivism, while the use of iron represented the industrial age. The series entitled Les terres déchirées (“devastated lands”), for example, illustrated this complementary balance between ancestry and industrialization while focusing on the modern threat of pollution to our planet.
