Jacques de Tonnancour studied at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal from 1937 to 1940. Known primarily as a painter, he was also an art critic, teacher, entomologist and photographer. He created several works for the integration of art into architecture, including a series of sculptures and murals for the Université de Montréal in 1968 and a mobile sculpture at Montreal’s Place Saint-Henri subway station in 1979.
