CORBEIL, Wilfrid (1893-1979)

Wilfrid Corbeil was a priest, artist, cultural facilitator, architect, restaurateur and teacher. A dedicated member of his region’s artistic community, he was particularly involved with the Séminaire de Joliette, where he taught drawing and painting and organized contemporary art exhibitions, and the Musée d’art de Joliette, which he helped to establish. In 1946, he founded Le Retable, a group of artists seeking to renew interest in religious art, and in 1966, played a role in spearheading the Symposium de Joliette. Corbeil was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1976 and received the Prix Louis-Philippe Hébert in 1977.
