Marie-France Brière holds a degree in art education (1977-1980) and an MFA in visual arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (1989), where she taught courses and workshops in stone sculpture in the 1990s. Awarded the Prix Louis-Comtois in 1996, she uses diverse materials in her work: stone, wood, plaster, clothing, fire and soot. Brière’s sculptures often resemble blocks, columns or panels and symbolically evoke the presence of the body. She has produced many works for the integration of art into architecture program, such as Le puits (1999) for the Salle André-Mathieu in Laval; Le miroir aux nuages (1998) for the Pavillon Albert-Prévost at Montreal’s Hôpital Sacré-Cœur; Cirque Lunaire (1997) at the Cinémathèque Québécoise in Montreal; La mélancolie des coffres (1996) for the Musée des arts et traditions populaires du Québec in Trois-Rivières; Quadrata (1993) at Mount Royal Cemetery in Outremont; and Laissez-moi travailler je me décompose (1992) for Un Nouveau Musée…pour rire in Montreal.
