With an interest in philosophy, art history and photography, Monique Bertrand creates installations that combine photography and sculpture. Subtle yet troubling, her work is shown regularly in solo exhibitions in Canada. During Artefact Montréal 2004 – Urban Sculptures on Mount Royal, Bertrand presented twelve steel plates suspended from trees: each plate bore either words, icons (e.g. star, crescent moon) or inscribed dates as seen on tombstones. For the 30th edition of Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie d’Arles, she held an exhibition entitled Dards d’art. Mouches, moustiques… modernité at the Musée Réattu. She has also collaborated on books such as Cimetières: la rage muette, published by Éditions Dazibao and produced jointly with writer Denise Desautels.
